The Toronto Star has an article about the potential resolution of the issue of Afghan interpreters wishing to immigrate to Canada. Western forces have relied heavily on local interpreters throughout the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Many of these ‘terps’ served loyally and are now in danger as western forces begin to leave.
Other western countries struggled with this dilemma and have enacted similar policies which seem only fair. The downside however is that in many cases these talented multilingual people would be valuable to their own troubled societies development.
The US is dealing with the same problem, though on a larger scale and with interpreters from two wars/countries; Iraq and Afghanistan.
